20 . Recapitulando . Recapitulating

This blog is about the participation of Plano B arquitectura in the architecture exhibition taking place in Vila Nova de Cerveira, as part of the Arts Biennial, until the 29th of September 2007. The participants in the exhibition are:

In the next posts we'll briefly present the participants. Meanwhile find below the text where the curator of the exhibition, architect Nuno Silva, makes a reading of the participations in the exhibition (the translation into something similar to english is ours).

ARQUITECTURA À MARGEM (Architecture at the Shore) was set to give visibility to some examples of transversal approaches to architecture, valuing multidisciplinary experiments, where projects let themselves be “contaminated” by other fields of knowledge and society, apart from the contexts where architecture usually dwells.

The exhibition is not some kind of a media best-of, or anti-media for that matter, on the contrary, it shows daily examples of alternatives reflecting the before mentioned transversal approaches.

Architecture as art installation, shown in the works by Plano B and 2012 Architecten, or the recycling of urban elements pursued in the work by Jan Korbes, are clear examples of the attempt to deny a photogenic-object and achieve a concept-object by subverting meanings of the elements put to use.

The materiality of earth and wood, establishing relations of continuity between the milieu and the work, being the later a prolongation of the first, are present in the work of Martin Rauch and John Wardle, while making use of constructive traditions do not deny the contemporaneity of conception.

The use, in a conceptually oriented way, of the energy and synergies provided by the natural environment – sun, wind, and so on – establishing formal and functional relations in a logical way between ecosystems – eco logical -, its exemplified widely through the work of BEDZED.

The importance of architectural teaching, of social consciousness of the architect, working with communities, encouraging self-construction, it’s widely developed by Rural Studio or by organizations such as ASF Int (Architecture Sans Frontiéres Internacional), who gives us clear examples of socially responsible architectural practices.

All these participants, who voluntarily accepted our invitation, promote the profession of the architect, avoiding truisms and proposing architectural practices at bay from present day institutional streams.

19 . Vida . Life

Although it's not much visible in this image, some kind of grass is sprouting in the asphalt!

18 . Partida, Largada ... Ready, Get set ...

18th of August was the opening of the exhibition. Among all of the visitors, were the children the ones that most enjoyed the space.

17 . Fissura . Crack

In the same day that the asphalt was poured the forms were taken away, showing some cracks on the wall. If we can't repair the cracks... we'll change the project image!

15 . Bienal . Biennial

Ocorre-me também o turismo...
The generic theme of the Biennial, which was "East/West", seems to have been replaced to "The New Crusades". The architecture island, documented in this blog, addresses some "hot" issues: nationalism, terrorism, sustainable development. Could these be some of the New Crusades? I could also think of tourism...

14 . Próximo capítulo . Next chapter

During this week an asphalt layer will be placed on top of the island surface. The asphalt should be, when finished, 3 to 5cm thick. We've drawn a chalk line in the forms to help the pouring and compaction of this final layer.

13 . Terceiro fim-de-semana . Third Weekend

Sunday afternoon in the third weekend of work.

12 . Compactação . Compaction

Some images after the ramming machine was dispensed and we've moved inside to finish up the work.

11 . Homem VS Máquina . Man VS Machine

The third weeken of work marked the final stage of the earth compaction. In the last few days we had the assistance of an efficient mechanical ramming machine. In spite of the almost unbearable atmosphere caused by the exhaust, we are pretty thankful to this little helper. We managed to have both mechanical and manual instruments working in coalition.

10 . Bolos . Cakes

We found in Cerveira, with the appropriate name of Cerveirenses (meaning the ones from Cerveira), some excellent cakes with ingredients that I don't know the name of in English and a cinnamon zest. We've tried different ones from three different bakeries, but the ones in the image, with the sugar powder on top are definitely the best! To compare earth construction to a cooking recipe isn't totally unappropriate (coment on post 09). In fact it's a mixture of several ingredients, being clay the egg and butter, silt the flour or maybe the sugar and sand the crushed almonds. Unfortunetely there isn't anything such as yeast! Nothing here grows as if by miracle...

09 . Segundo fim-de-semana . Second weekend

During the weekend we placed layers of bricks and earth... slowly.

08 . Fiadas de tijolo . Brick layers

This is an animation of the several brick and earth layers to be applied. A preview into a perfect world of effortless and fast construction!

07 . Primeiro fim-de-semana . First weekend

The construction process is simply to make a wall between the metal forms and the bricks placed inside. The bricks will produce, simultaneously, the desired topography and the inside containment for the wall. On top of the bricks a layer of earth without lime is made wet and compacted.

06 . Terra . Earth

The material we're using was taken from a nearby site. It's a redish dirt with peculiar characteristics. In our project we planned to build with rammed earth, but we found out that rammed earth wouldn't be adequate for the kind of earth we got. We are now doing something like Cob, with a relatively high water content, but without straw, added of 5% hydraulic lime...We'll come back to update this post, meanwhile we leave some images (see below).

In the week we had to get acquainted with the material available for this project, we made some technical and empirical research. The objective was trying to perceive the characteristics of the soil and adapt its use for this specific project: a temporary construction, a time of execution of 3 to 4 weeks, built by unspecialized labour, subjected to a demanding use (since visitors will have curiosity to touch the earthen walls).

In a visual assessment of the soil we noticed its red/orange colour, a fine texture, with reflective particles probably mica and quartz. The sedimentation test made with a bottle to determine the granulometry of the earth was not conclusive, given the homogeneity of the sample, thus rendering difficult to establish the clay percentage in it. It was verified, by touch, that the soil "glued" with a relatively high water percentage and that it disaggregated easily. In the retraction test there was an insignificant change of the sample dimensions.

With these data we assume that the soil we’re working with comes from the decomposition of granite and that the clay in it is red Kaolin (with a probable iron oxide presence) in an undetermined percentage.

After some compaction tests we concluded that the result wouldn’t be satisfactory, since only with a high percentage of water a dense reorganization of the particles was achieved. However, this amount of water hindered an efficient compaction. Even when the compaction was satisfactory, the samples had a resistant but dusty surface.

Out of this analysis we determined the mixture and the constructive process to be used in the first session of work (which will be evaluated in the next session). The mixture (by volume) was: 20 parts of soil + 1 part of hydraulic lime + 3/4 parts of water. We changed the technique from the energetic compaction used in rammed earth to something in between compaction and vibration, partly made with feet.

The use of lime was justified by the need of a more resistant surface than the one we got from plain soil. We choose hydraulic lime to get a relatively fast resistance while helping to consume the water added to the soil for compaction/vibration. If we had used a non-hydraulic binder we might compromise the resistance of the wall at the time of the opening of the exhibition.
---
These conclusions, we must admit, are somewhat feeble. There is a considerable risk of structural or aesthetic imperfections in the end. However, having had a limited time to carry tests, we must assume this risk as part of the project and a consequence of building with earth.

05 . O Plano . The Plan

Our idea, let's call it The Plan, it's to move this pile of dirt...

... aqui dentro ...

... inside here ...

... seguindo esta linha ondulante.

... along this wavy line.

04 . Casa do Artesão . The Craftsman House

This is the place we'll be spending the next couple of weekends moving earth around and ramming it, carrying bricks and whatever more is needed. By the way, feel free to come by and give us a hand!

03 . Cerveira (para ir acrescentando) . (to be added)

Neste espaço iremos colocando algumas imagens de Cerveira e arredores.

Here we'll be posting some images from Cerveira and around.

02 . Correcção . Correction

We've started this blog with a mistake now to be corrected:

1. This is not the first architectural event held at the Arts Biennial of Cerveira. The first time was at the X Biennial, a colaborative work with architect Rosado Correia and the organization of arch. Pedro Leão. It consisted of a debate and a workshop about military architecture in Brazil. A publication was made from that event. We apologize for the omission and appreciate the atention of Henrique Silva from the organization to the blog and it's correction.
---
Later today we hope to post the first images of the construction. Keep returning!

01 . A Ilha da Arquitectura . Island of Architecture

The Cerveira Arts Biennial is a 30 years old event held at the idyllic Vila Nova de Cerveira, in the northwest of Portugal, on the banks of Minho River, a natural border with Spain.

This year the Biennial will host for the first time an architectural exhibit. The exhibition title – Arquitecturas à Margem - which in a free translation is “Architectures on the shore”, will present architectural practices that are striving to produce “off the beaten track” architectures...

Plano B is a young architectural office aiming for a critical approach to issues such as Sustainable Development, Technological Progress, juxtaposing the use of natural construction materials with industrial ones.

The proposal of Plan B architecture for the Biennial of Cerveira intervenes in the entire space destined to the exhibition "Arquitecturas à Margem".

Being Plano B the only Portuguese participant, it seemed appropriate to assume the role of hosts, making the guests of other countries "feel at home". Our project is, thus, the physical support to all other participants: "Homeland - Island of Architecture".

In an ecumenical gesture, we choose to materialize the proposal through two of the most common materials in the world: earth and asphalt. An abruptly cut undulating surface on which a fine asphalt layer will be applied.

The construction of an island allows playing with the ideas of territory: as an artificial geography and as a political entity (an island of architecture).

This seems adequate to the subject of this year Biennial - East/West - and as a reflection on the relation between architecture and the construction industry, the artistic scene or society at large.

It was meant to criticize a world-wide context of increasing suspicion, threat and fear among countries and individuals, and simultaneously of international and individual concern with the environment.

At Homeland, the territory was made into plots, as if it were an urban development. Each plot is assigned to one participant.

The public will walk around the island until it reaches a checkpoint – an allusion to border controls. There he will be subjected to an inquiry which will determine, through some hidden rule, access to the exhibition area.

Just before stepping on the asphalt, visitors will be asked to take of their shoes.

Welcome to Homeland!
